The Region

This single origin is a stunning addition to our collection, sourced from the high-altitude hills of Arbegona in the East Sidama Zone. This lot represents the pinnacle of Ethiopian coffee, grown at staggering altitudes of up to 2,350 meters above sea level. Arbegona is renowned for its unique microclimate, where the thin air and cool temperatures allow the cherries to mature slowly, concentrating sugars and resulting in a cup of exceptional clarity and complexity.

The Farm

Nigusse Gemeda’s career in coffee spans nearly 27 years. After inheriting land at age 16, he initially operated in total isolation, transporting his harvest via donkeys and mules to reach local markets. His trajectory changed permanently in 2020 when he won the inaugural Ethiopian Cup of Excellence (COE). His entry from Karamo Kebele earned a record-breaking 91.04 score, the highest in the competition’s Ethiopian history. This milestone allowed Nigusse to establish Karamo Coffee Export, moving from local commodity sales to direct global trade and specialised processing.

The Profile

This lot features the 74158 variety, a specific heirloom selection favored for its performance at extreme altitudes and its refined floral profile. The coffee is processed using the washed method at one of Nigusse’s five processing sites. By removing the fruit and washing the beans before drying them on raised beds, the process highlights the "terroir" of the Arbegona Woreda, emphasizing clarity and bright acidity.
Featuring tasting notes of Hibiscus, White Grape and Macadamia this is a versatile coffee which shines both with and without milk. We recommend this coffee for both home espresso and filter brewing methods.
