The Region
Kenya's highlands are renowned for their coffee growing conditions, the landscapes unique combination of soil, altitude and temperature create the ideal environment for the Kibirigwi Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) to cultivate their coffee.
The Mill
The cultivation of coffee at the FCS is comprised of 950 smallholder farmers who process their coffee at the Kiangai mill, one of eight factories operated by the Kibirigwi FCS. This particular mill utilises the flowing water of the Kibirigwi River to give the coffee a washed process. Following this, the coffee is hand sorted before pulping, fermenting, grading and drying.
The Impact
The Kibirigwi FCS has a long standing history in Kenya's coffee growing scene, with their roots established in the 1960s. Their dedication to quality and community has not only allowed them to develop an exceptional example of Kenyan Coffee, but they've also consistency invested in their community and the longevity of the coffee cultivation. This is achieved by working closely with an in house agronomist who has implemented replanting efforts, organic manure and modern infrastructure like tiled washing channels and fermentation tanks.
