The Region
Throughout Kenya's picturesque central regions of Embu, Kisii, Kirinyaga, Machakios, Nakura and Nyeri, 15 farmers contribute to the cultivation of the biological anomaly known as the Kenya Peaberry.
The Process
Usually a coffee cherry contains two symmetrical beans at its centre, however the peaberry is a mutation resulting in the formation of a single, pea shaped bean, usually accounting for 5% of a farmers harvest. What causes this mutation is currently unknown and it is not able to be intentionally replicated so farmers must work collectively to generate enough Peaberrys to sell.
The Peaberry
The Peaberrys unique shape drastically alters the beans development, from its beginnings absorbing more sugar than a usual coffee cherry, to its roundness making it absorb heat more evenly in a once its inside the roasting drum. The Kenya Peaberry is a highly sought after coffee by coffee drinkers, so we are thrilled to be reintroducing it as one of our offerings. With tasting notes of Prune, Pomegranate, and Black Pepper this coffee suits a person who enjoys a strong fruity coffee without milk.
