This superb lot of coffee was selected from 64 members of ASORCAFÉ, located in and around Inzá. It is made up of several micro-lots that were grouped and cupped 85 points or above by the Association.
The Asociación de Productores de Café del Oriente Caucano (ASORCAFÉ) was founded in 2010 by 10 producers, the group now has 450 smallholder members spread across the valleys of the Macizo Colombiano.
Due to long standing traditions of land division through inheritance, the average farm size in the state of Cauca is less than a hectare. As such, co-operatives such as ASORCAFÉ play an incredibly important role in the region, allowing smallholders to share resources and negotiate collectively to fetch better prices for their coffees.
Another aspect to the cooperative is how in many ways it functions as a small town in comparison to traditional coffee producer alliances. Health benefits, social security, bereavement leave (even funeral costs are covered) are all provided for an annual fee. As such, ASORCAFÉ have very high, rigorous entry standards that include well maintained fermentation tanks and pulpers. The collective is also working toward a plot of food crops to guarantee self sustaining food access.
Roasted by Venn, this bean is buttery and rich, perfect as an espresso or a long black with bright raspberry notes, and blends perfectly with milk coffees with a strong dark chocolate punch. We also used it in our first limited cold brew release, Batch One, to celebrate the launch of Venn!
