Ethiopia is widely believed to be ground zero for the first species of the coffea plant. More specifically, the region of Kaffa, which lies within the Oromia region of the country’s southwest. Within this region, an estimated 150,000 tones of coffee are produced per year, 95% of producers responsible for this figure are smallholder farms which consist of 424,300 households.
The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union decides and protects the inner workings of the country’s coffee production. With Democracy at its heart, the OCFCU, allows farmers to vote freely on crucial matters that impact their livelihoods. The Union also ensures 70% of net profits are returned to the farmers, which is reinvested within the community to build vital infrastructure like health facilities, water wells, and schools.
Coffee production plays a vital role in Ethiopia’s cultural heritage and society. Unwavering dedication, pristine climatic conditions, and the centuries-long intertwining of the country’s development with coffee result in a cup renowned for its bold, clean, and sweet profile.
This coffee is floral with a surprising sweetness. With tasting notes of rosehip earl grey and cashew butter, this bean is versatile and suits coffee served both with or without milk.
